No superstitions at Science Council EVERYONE knows people who would rather'stay home on a-Friday the 13th, than take a chance on falling vic- tim to"*‘tbad luck’’. Many highrise apartment and’ office buildings don't list a 13th floor. The 13th person in.a boat or on a bus is considered unlucky, Fear of the numvuer ‘13’? is widespread. But none of the phobias and ssiperstitions surroun- ding the number ‘13’ is concerning the Science Council of British Colum- bia. Since it was established by the provincial gov- ernment in 1978, the Science Council has administered 12 competitions for research grants. The competition underway this autumn is the 13th. MORE APPLICATIONS A spokesman for the Science Council said that, if anything, the number of ap- plicants in the 13th competi- tion: may be higher than usual, indicating that the researchers seeking assistance aren’t superstitious either. With the economy of British Colum- bia still in a period of recov- ery, many small companies and university researchers will be looking for the kind of financial assistance the Science Council can provide. Typically, the Council receives from 80 to 100 ap- plications in a competition. Of these, about one in three succeeds in obiaining the funds requested. People seeking Science Council assistance should write for an application form. The address is: The Science Council -of British Columbia, Suite 100 - 3700 ma ("ALL N entrees Free with this © 6 oz.
