HILARIOUS, not horrify-
ing, the movie Ghostbusters
should cause smiles to break
out on the faces of all who
see it. But then, with come-
dians Bill Murray and Dan
Aykroyd gathering up all the
unwanted ghosts in New
York, the spirit of this film
couldn’t be anything but
funny.

Ghostbusters is not
haunted by an over-serious
look at the paranormal. This
spoof on spint hunting has
conjured up the real thing tn
special effects and delivered a
well-aimed kick at things that
go bump in the night. The
only really scary scene in this
film is when the three
Ghostbusters are told that

Dr. Venkman, ever the.
smooth-talking spook chaser,
is always ready to combine
business with pleasure.
Especially when he meets
Dana (Sigourney Weaver),
who gets a chilling surprise
when her refrigerator is taken
over by the spirit world.

As Dr. Venkman, Bill
Murray is never without a
wisecrack guaranteed to draw
a Jaugh. In fact, if there is
one problem with this movie,
Murray’s lines may be it. Any
ex-fan of Saturday Night
Live will soon recognize that

category for Secret Invasion,
one of two films he placed
amongst the finalists.

More than 75 original films
and videotapes were submit-
ted for initial judging by the

Murray is mouthing the same
kind of quick one-liners in
Ghostbusters that he used
constantly on the popular
Saturday Night Live show.

While it’s impossible not to
laugh when Dr. Venkman
faces down a green blob that
leaves him covered in pro-
toplasm, ‘‘He shmed me’’
cracks Murray, the same kind
of one-liners become too
predictable.

Dan Aykroyd, another
Saturday Night Live comic,
seems to have more room to
move in Ghostbusters and at
times plays the straightman
while retaining his own
humor. ‘‘He’s an ugly little
spud isn’t he?’’ he comments
when faced by the green blob
that slimed Dr. Venkman.

combines the sensuous nature
of Sigourney Weaver and
special effects. Possessed by
spirits, Weaver brings some
levitated laughs to the movie
as she floats above her bed,
mouthing lines right out of
the Exorcist. _

Ghostbusters will break you up

powerless to stop them. The
fate of New York is in the
hands of the Ghostbusters,
who armed with nuclear ac-
celerator packs, set out to
stop the spooks. While
Alfred Hitchcock might be
offended by all the laughter
that results, Ghostbusters
will let its audiences rest in
peace, knowing they got their
money’s worth. Ghostbusters
