side, Dr. Michael Kates,
Joanne's husband, had found

that many exercising
mothers :
-have not needed = any

anaesthetic during delivery
- are better able to avoid
depression and mood swings
that pregnancy and hormone
changes can cause
- are able to cope much
better with the whole of the
delivery.

He feels that exercising
also offers an outlet for the
pregnant mom and an op-

portunity to share common
feelings during the nine
months and after.

And Joanne 1s atso in-
volved in the “after”.

Along with the “pre”
fitness, there is also the
“post” pregnancy classes

that do wonders in getting
the new mothers back in
shape in a short penod of
tume.

Because of the popularity
of the fitness classes, many
of the new mothers have
stayed on and Joanne now
offers extra sessions geared
mainly at a general fitness
program and which are filled
mostly by “grads” of the pre
and post classes.

The classes for expecting
and new mothers keep in
mind the obvious difference
from regular fitness. For
instance, there is no running
or jumping until two months

gatherings. They are set up
to improve the all round
fitness of the individual and
to prepare her for the
delivery of her baby and
then get her back in shape
soon after.

For those who are worried
over the image of the
fanatical fitness instructor
driving her charges through
a tortuous routine, Kates 1s
nota fanatic.

Friendly and quiet spoken
she will never be mistaken
for a drill sergeant. But she
has a system that is gaining
populanty, not only among
those who take part but also
among the medical fraternity
with more and more doctors
encouraging their pregnant
patients to keep active.

The fitness classes also
seem to eliminate the weight

“Pm not sure I ever really
lost my shape so it wasn't all
that hard to get it back. Even
at the end of my pregnancy,
I wore my skimpiest bikini.
My stomach was huge and |
was proud of it. The rest of
me looked the same as

her classes some months
before her son Justin was
born, it appeared almost as a
novelty. But today the
classes continue to grow and
