Ogging is:one of the - essential parts of total fitness for women, according to Wendi-— Lacusta, the West Vancouver fitness coordinator. Lacusta was commenting on a recent News story from Los Angeles in which a 54- year-old woman said she did not jog because “jogging is not for women.” At the West Vancouver Recreation Centre they do not agree. As an example of just how satisfying and beneficial for women running can be, Lacusta uses the example of a local fitness group. “ The scene: A_ trim energetic group of 20 women, from 17 to 50 years pld, gathered outside Chartwell School for their regular fitness class. They joke and share news as they perform their achilles and hamstring stretChes as a warmup before their structured workout in the sym. The group of hard core - fitness conscious women is off to do an eight mile run through the hills of the British Properties. Why? Lacusta explains that there are probably many reasons women run - to control weight, to relieve - Stress, ‘to be part of the _ group, or to prepare for road’ races or marathons. But” probably. the most important reason is that they all realize the importance of strong and healthy heart and lungs, known in fitness terms as the cardio-respiratory system. The women in the fitness < group, some of whom run marathons (26 miles) in under three-and-a-half hours, are led by Naomi: Miller. Miller is a _ past’ medium distance runner. who is the only female masters athlete in the B.C. Sports Hall of Fame. Miller. has developed the group and taught them how to train their bodies as well as to love the sport. They all know their bodies must workout on a regular basis at a high intensity before their capacity to use oxygen (aerobic fitness) improves. For the beginner, Lacusta says, that should be 20 minutes of ‘continuous rhythmic exercise at least three times a week. The women in Miller's group run up to 15 miles.a day. Their regular run is an eight mile jog. Their bodies are finely tuned and they must work harder to see further im- provements.
