Mich. (UPI) - Triumphant in
last place in the Port Huron
to Mackinac Island yacht
race, the crew of the
Goodbight is setting sail for
another defeat in Chicago.
Don Shumaker, Good-
bight’s skipper, blamed his
tardiness on the crew's
inability to pronounce
“Siochil,” the boat they
trailed by five hours in the
craw] to the finish line.
Goodbight’s crew mem-
bers said thcy knew they
were on the right course
whenever they saw the stern
lettering “Siochil,” looming
ahead through fog, mist.

and dead calms. -
“Unfortunately,” the skip-
per complaincd, “nonc of
our lookouts could
pronounce ‘Siochil’ and
consequently couldn't tell
the helmsman where it was

According . to Siochil
crewmen, the name of the
second-to-last boat to cross
the finish line is pronounced
“sea shell.”

The Goodbight also was
slowed by the on-board
menu, which required a
freezer, ice box, full range,
toaster, blender, grill and
hot and cold shower for the
cook.

The menu — prepared
ahead by = crew-members’
wives — included chicken
cordon bleu with wild rice,
spaghetti Debbie, quiche
Dayna, beef stroganoff with
garlic bread and 9 cases of
beer for the crew of six.

“Our greatest achieve-
ment,” the skipper said “was
having cnough ice to last
nine days. We didn’t serve
wine because we didn't want
to be thought of as effete.”
