Bill. Scott, a 29-year-old

from ‘down under’ ran his
first marathon in June of last
year. This year, under.cool,
-cloudy skies — ideal
distance weather, Scott put
his race together and came

home in a time of 2:15:56 for _

the 26 mile, 385 jaunt.

According to face of-
ficials, -about 1,000 entries
started off the 7:30 a.m. run
from the Robson Square
complex. With a little luck
the officials are hoping the

event can be built into a

major international event for
Vancouver. However, with
the increase in the number
of long distance runners and
runs, this could provide a
problem. .

With the Pan Am games
and Olympics looming on
the horizon, most runners
have already set’ their
schedules and plans for the
next year or so.

Top Canadian was Tom
Howard of Surrey who came

home in third place, good -

enough to earn him a berth
‘on the Can Pan Am team.
Howard finished with a time
of 2:18:32. ;

The Canadian came into .|-.

the race not knowing
whether he would even
finish much less be in the
medals. Howard had run in
the Boston “ Marathon in
April, finishing in 40th
place. ;

The usual recovery time
between marathons is six
weeks. Howards second run
was well before the so-called
recovery time needed.

Gail McKean of Comox,
B.C. was the top woman
finisher.

Canada picked up the
team award followed by New
Zealand, Australia and the
United States.
