B.C. TEL will begin market testing
a new public telephone that takes
charge cards, starting in April of
this year.

Card Phones, as they have been
named, will accept all magnetic-

striped Telecom Canada and

AT&T Calling Cards, as well as
American Express, Visa and
Master Card charge cards.

in Vancouver, in keeping with the
theme of transportation and com-

| All fifty B.C, Tel Card Phonés
used in the market trial will be sit-
uated in Vancouver with 35 termi-
nals on the Expo site and the re-
maining 15 in the downtown core.
Card Phones will be a major
benefit to those who travel or do
’ ‘business away from the office.

Using a plastic, magnetically en-
coded calling card or charge card,
the caller simply lifts the handset,
listens for a dial tone, inserts the
card into a vertical slot on the right
of the handset and slides it
downwards. In a matter of seconds
. the billing information is verified,
- and the caller hears another tone.
:. The caller then key presses the
desired telephone number and the
call is connected.
- The security features of the Card
- Phones cannot be underestimated.
“As“the billing information is read
automatically off the card, the
chance of fraud is minimized.
It is. impossible to see the card
-number being entered or overhear
any biliing information. As well,
_ the procedure for using a Card
Phone does not require the card to

_. leave the user’s hand. It cannot be.
- “eaten’” by the Card Phone or

forgotten i in the slot.

“USER-FRIENDLY”

“The Card Phone is convenient in
that it eliminates the need to
reverse charges or make third party
Jong distance calls. As it accepts no
coins, there is ‘no need to. carry
loose change.

Card Phones are “user-friend-
ly”, meaning a. recorded voice
message instructs the caller in the
correct procedure for placing calls.
In addition, instructions are

for accessing the operator if neces-
