Parent calls for additional public input Catherine Barr Contributing Writer THE independent per- formance review of West Vancouver school superintendent Doug Player is being chal- lenged by a concerned parent who charges that the review needs far more public input. “All I'm trying to do is alert the community thar this is hap- pening,” said Lillian Boyd Yeager. Yeager, who makes no bones about her dislike for Player’s leadership style, dis- agrees with the way community inpui is being gathered for the performance review, “T think that the sampling is far too small! considering the importance of the fact that he is going to get another contract -ata fairly healthy rate,” she said. > Yeager said more communi- ty input is needed before deter- “ mining if Player’s contract should be renewed. She said she is dissatisfied with the cur- rent review method which, she chims, asks only for the opin- ions of teachers, staff and par- ent advisory comminttces. But according to West Vancouver District 45 School WV school supt. Doug _ Plever under review. Board chairman Clive Bird, the evaluation, timing and method used for gathering information is all part of the board’s normal procedures. He said that because Player’s contract will expire in July 1999, the review needs to be performed now. “We are required to tell him one year in advance of expiry,” Bird said. The review is being con- ducted by Fleury & Associates and the results are due back by the end of April. If the board is satisfied, Plaver’s contract will be renewed for another three- year term. Bird rejects Yeager’s theory and says that the integrity of the results rely on the scientitic methods governing the proper gathering of randomly sampled information. He said the sample group is “fairly large” and includes peo- ple like the mayor and other community officials. He also said that a wide range of ques- tions are being asked. “Hiring the superintendent and reviewing his performance is. probably the single most important thing we do as a board and that’s why we go to the trouble,” said Bird. “Ir’s not part of our evaluation Process to have people phone up and say “Give me a form, 1 want to fill one out.” I’m pretty sure that the consultant would Py RIDABLETON STEIN Eg tp tere - not want to take that kind of thing into account. On the other hand, Bird is satistied with Plaver’s pertor- mance to date. “Not speaking for the board, just speaking for myself, Pm very pleased with the superintendent’s performance and | regard him as being a very important part of the suc- cess that our district has enjoyed,” he said. “I think he’s an excellent superintendent.” CORRECTION NOTICE A typographical error and an omission of a para- graph appeared in an Eau Canada advertise- ment that appeared on page 11 in the Sunday, March 8, edition of the North Shore News.
