Some of the drivers have been at it literally for years, and they. find themselves play- ‘ing a very important role in the life of the people they serve. They become trusted contfi- dants and real friends, and can add a lot to the days of women who are neglecting themselves or men who don’t know how to cope alone. They can share this intima- cy with the authorities who don’t have similar access, and ‘ thus procure attention for something being ignored or disguised, Each lunch is delivered hot for four dollars, and is some- times eaten on delivery, often divided between lunch and dinner. There are three meals each week, Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and should holidays occur, arrangements are made to suit, Margaret, the coordinator, finds some staffing shortages sometimes — so many women have jobs iow, even the part- time ones can cut down on her available driver-power.
