Giant PNE relief map listed in Guiness as world record THE PACIFIC National Exhibition’s Challenger Relief Map will be listed in the 1993 edition of the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest map of its kind in the world. The PNE recently received word: of the record-breaking status of its popular hand-carved three-dimensionai map, which is housed in the B.C. Pavilion on the fairgrounds. The Challenger Relief Map is 23 metres by 25 metres in size and consists of about one million pieces, all fit- ting snugly together like a gigantic jigsaw puzzle. The 40-year-old map is all natural; it is made en- tirely out of B.C. Douglas fir. The map was created by B.C. tesident George Challenger and his son, Robert. George began working on the map in 1945 as a retirement project; the work was completed in 1952. it found a permanent home at the PNE in 1954, The B.C. Pavil- ion, which opened that same year in honor -of the Commonwealth Games, was designed specifically to house the Challenger Relief Map. The B.C, Pavilion, always a popular destination spot during the annual summer fair, is also open year-round so that individu- als and groups can enjoy guided tours of the map and other special sights. . The Challenger Relief Map also shows the Alaska Panhandle and parts of the Yukon, Northyvest Territories, Washington State, Montana and Idaho. Tours are conducted with guests travelling comfortably on an ele- vated platform that moves over the map.
