ero A NORTH Vancouver fa- ther and son team is doing something with metal that not many other people have managed to do. By Surj Rattan News Reporter While jumk sards sefi metal for scrap, Bernhard and Mare Rohne seil the material as art. From the Bero Designs studio ou Mountain Highway in) North Vancouver, the Rohnes sake everything from furniture to art pieces that are shown in exhibits in such places as Germany. And the key to their success iy the art of oxidation. “We work mainly with metals. The surface of the metal has been oxidized or etched,” says 48- year-old Bernhard Rohne. He uses a variety of techniques to create the design and product he wants. Roline says acids are used to etch the metals. “Briefly, we first apply the design by hand or serigraph to the metai sheet using an acid-resis(ant material,*” says Rohne. ‘This metal sheet is then subjected to the etching process by treating is with acid. During the etching pro- cess, the surface of the areas left unprotected will be “lightly caten away, leaving ihe design raised slightly from its background. "* The metal is then treated with chemicals to impart the unique oxidation or colorized patterns of the background. Rohne says that while cach piece undergoes this treatment, the results are never identical, The piece is then carefully hand- finished and lacquered to protect the surface. “We're mainly exporting our product in the commercial fields for tables and doors, but you do NOTIC BERNHARD ROHWNE air brushes a city scape at his North Vancouver studio. need an art background to be able to do this,’ says Rohne. ‘‘We deal with furnitare companies, sign companies and art exhibits. We have an agent in Germany who takes our work to exhibits.” Rohne, who has been working out of the same North Vancouver location for the past 20 years, says he and his son were pioneers in working with metal and using the oxidation process. “We're unique in’ North America. My son enjoys it. {Cs almost like color photography, because you have to develop it yourself,"" says Rokne. Rohne was born in West Ger- many; itis 28-year-old son, Mare, was born in Victoria and atiended school in North Vancouver.
