A4 - Sunday, August 26, 1984 - North Shore News Strictly personal by Bob Hunter The peace fight OR AN OLD PEACE FREAK this is slightly uncomfortable to say, but I have been out travelling around the world a fair amount in the last few years, and I have noticed certain things. The upshot of this ex- perience is that I now think the way to stay peaceful is to be prepared to fight. Personally, | figured this out a long time ago. After a scary incident at Malibu Beach, where my family was threatened by violence which [had no way of preventing, I decided to take up karate. After more than two years of painful training and exer- cise, | got to the point where | finally felt 1 could protect myself and my loved ones from most bad actors. There was an unexpected side effect: it now became easier to stay out of fights simply because there-was no danger of me stumbling into one to ‘‘prove’’ myself. Once ! knew enough about self defence, it got easy to walk away. Okay. I’m sure | have more than one left-leaning old friend out there who still thinks that the only way to register a ‘‘peace’’ vote is to mark an X beside a New Democrat’s name — or, maybe, if they really haven't PROGRESSIVE CONSERVATIVE VOTING DAY Tuesday, September 4, 1984 9:00 A.M to800PM ADVANCE POLLS August 27, 28, 1984 been paying attention, beside a Liberal’s. I want to say that | think the Tories are actually closer to the mark when it comes to maintaining the peace than either the Liberals, who emasculated our armed forces, or the NDP, who would treat the military like lepers. wars are fought. To outlaw war is human- kind’s oldest dream. We might still be dreaming about it a million years from now. In the meantime, what we really need to outlaw, in order merely to survive long enough to continue the debate, is nuclear war. Obviously nobody with The Bomb is going to pay much attention to a twerp without one — but even the nuclear heavies acknowledge that The Bomb is a lousy “I think the Tories are actually closer to the mark when it comes to maintaining peace.’ In fact, | am convinced, the biggest contribution Canada can make to world peace ts to build up our con- ventional forces to the point where a non-nuclear battle could be fought if necessary, lessening the chance of a straight-off-the-top nuclear exchange. There are a lot of reasons — and some of them haven’t been invented yet — why weapon. You can’t really use ion a place you want to oc- cupy. And even if you start bombing in five minutes, .as the Reagan joke goes, the wind is hable to carry the fall- out back to your own back- yard. Most of the wars of the future — like all of the wars of the present — will be non- nuclear. There is another, more daring way of looking at the issue of peace, which is really a debate about not having war. It was illumianted for all to see by the Cruise missile. If Canada had had any kind of independent military clout, the feds might have been able tO resist pressure from Washington to roll over on their backs and let a nuclear weapon be tested between Alberta’s legs. As it was, having — let Canada’s contribution to NATO sink to the level where il was proportional to Lux- embourg’s, having allowed “our bit’? in NORAD to nearly totally vamish, and downsizing the armed forces as a token watchdog, the Liberals have left us ab- solutely no room to manoeuvre either for or against peace. We are eunuchs. Building up our armed forces is the best defence against nuclear war. That may sound like heresy to peacentks, but in the real world, that's the truth. Nobody has the monopoly on peace. The Tories may sound like hawks, but | think their attitude toward the military is far more likely to provide peace in the long run than that of the apparent Liberal or NDP doves.
