Appeal volunteers sought

LEADERS OF the Red Shield
Appeal! residential canvass on the
North Shore were announced
recently by the Salvation Army.

Organizing the May canvass are
Keith Bower, Mary Parsons, Karen
Granholm, Alyson Witts, Brenda
Roman, Fran Wilson, Anne Galts
and Joan Barter.

“We need a volunteer army of
1,700 canvassers on Monday, May
7 te cover all residences on the
North Shore,’’ said Bergie Wilson,
chairman of this year’s canvass.
“The Salvation Army needs the
money to continue their vital ser-
vices for helping people.

‘I was at the Sally Anne’s Har-
bour Light Centre and they are

serving 1,000 meals daily to hungry
people on their soup line,” said
Wilson. ‘‘This humanitarian agen-
cy can use your help raising money
and two hours of your time on
Monday, May 7 will make a dif-
ference.””

The proceeds of the Red Shield
Appeal are allocated locally to the
45 services and programs operated
by the Salvation Army in the
Lower Mainland, including alco-
holic treatment centres for men
and women, senior citizen homes,
hostels for the homeless and
emergency food and clotning for
poor families.

Boys’, Girls’ Club help wanted

THE BOYS’ and Girls’ Clubs of

Greater Vancouver are seeking
people to volunteer a few hours
each week to offer leadership and
guidance to youth in North Van-
couver, Vancouver, North Bur-
naby, Surrey, Port Coquitlam and
Langley.

Volunteers may lend their exper-
tise in a variety of programs such
as arts and crafts, drama, science,

magic, computers, floor hockey,
ceramics and other fun activities.

Volunteers are also needed to
help participate year-round in
various fundraising events.

An orientation meeting for any-
one interested in becoming involv-
ed with the Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs
will be held at 2875 St. George St,
Vancouver, Wed. March 14 at 7
p.m.

Veteran gunners plan a blast

SIXTY VETERAN gunners of the
16th Light Anti-Aircraft Battery
will meet at the Sandman Inn at 2
p.m. Wednesday, March 14 to
celebrate the 50th anniversary of
the Battery’s formation and
overseas departure.

The Battery, together with Reg-
imental Headquarters from Vic-
toria, served as a unit in the 3rd
LAA regiment in the 2nd Cana-

dian Division. They saw action in
the Dieppe operation of 1942 and
in Northwest Europe in 1944-45,
but most notably were the first
Canadian battery to shoot down
an enemy aircraft over England in
1941.

All former members are invited
