Taxi coupons hoped to make roads safer IT’S A new venture in averting needless tragedy, said ICBC vice-president of Insurance Operations Mike McCarthy recently, as he joined with Lyall Hanson, Minister of Labor and Consumer Services, to inelp kick off Road Safe — a new traffic safety program. Developed by ICBC’s Traffic Safety Education department, in cooperation with !@ Lower Mainland taxi companies and 7-Eleven food stores, Road Safe provides taxi gift certificates for people to use as an alternative to riding with an impaired driver. As part of the campaign, Road Safe packets will be available at 9G 7-Eleven stores throughout the Lower eer weet Ces Mainiand. The packets cost $15 each and contain $15 worth of taxi fare coupons, $12.50 worth of product coupons, and an educational brochure. The coupons are completely transferrable. During November, the program is being marketed to parents for use by their teenagers or other children. In December, the focus will switch to adults, urging them to make a sober decision to buy Road Safe be- fore they go celebrating. Other participating sponsors in the venture are CKNW, Coke, Palm Dairies and the Vancouver Canucks.
