Now, it seems, opponents of the controversial bandshell planned for Ambleside Park may win the day — by default. North Shore's lady representative in Ottawa -- and attended by her namesake, the News’ resident pit Conceived a year ago as a monument to West Van's 75th an- niversary, the $600,000 project kicked of f with a $100,000 gift from Victoria and $25,000 from a TY auction, but after that the fundraising proved tough going. Last November, Anniversary Chairman Jim MacCarthy asked council for another five months in which to seck from corporate donors the some $300,000 he was still short. Council agreed, while stressing that not a cent would be forthcoming from taxpayers. With the deadline now only a few weeks away — and Anniver- sary Year fading into a memory — the word is that the bandshell tightlipped on figures but agrees that a firm decision ‘for this year" will have to be made by the end of March. Asked if that meant a choice between postponing con- struction for another 12 months or killing the project altogether, he would only reply, ‘‘that's an inter- esting speculation."’ Be it said, in fairness to Jim and his colleagues, that every other item in the packed 75th Anniver- sary program they put together during 1987 proved an unqualified success. That record wan't be spoiled by the bandshell winding up as their one blooper — to the cheers of all those who cherish peaceful parks! bull. In between questioning by other board members, the mauling given by columnist Doug Collins to MP Mary Collins and her Tory colleagues would have made great TV. Doug chewed into Mary with gusto on Third World immigra- tion, bogus refugees, bilinguatism, affirmative job action and sanc- tions against South Africa, scoring repeated points based on his ex- haustive research of such topics. Mary hadn't too many answers but scored points by managing to keep a smiling, unruffled cool throughout —- no small feat with the pit bull's tecth in her. Promises, promises ANFOR undoubtedly has good intentions for the future upgrade of its Port Mellon puip mill, but the mill’s past record of failed compliance with its permitted provincial air pollution levels can hardly be expected to inspire a sudden confidence in those intentions. Concern over pollution from the mill and what would eppear to be another end-run around the re- quirements of its 1986 extended air pollution variance order has spread beyond the vocal assault of a single high-profile West Vancouverite to residents and municipal councils all around Howe Sound. | Canfor points to a projected $635 million investment : in a new Port Melion mill and vastly improved pollu- ‘ tion standards as rezsons enough for another extension ‘of pollution deadlines and residents’ patience. ‘ But the reservoir of patience has suddenly gone dry. The promise of future company prosperity and cleaner Howe Sound air and water remains just that: a promise, reliant upon a number of unresolved details. Those who have watched and documented Port Mellon’s failure to comply with its permitted air pollu- tion standards since 1978 and watched the provincial ' government grant the mill special permission to excced those standards in 1983 and 1986 have lost faith in promises. it is little wonder that a relentless insistence for the mil! to comply to provincial pollution standards has become a roared demand for the mill to deliver on one promise before embarking on another. one was almost tempted to call the game a tic, oe POSTSCRIPTS: Looking for some gentle weekend exercise?
