STRIDE TO FITNESS Walk on the wild side WALKING FOR fitness has become the rage in 1987. Fast- paced, determined walkers, often in groups, can be seen on city trails and sea walks. Walking three to four miles an hour, often through hilly terrain, is a sure-fire method of getting fit, losing weight, and toning and trimming hips and thighs. Many diehard runners are adding aerobic walking days to their training regime to lessen im- pact stress on their bodies. The West Vancouver Parks and Recreation Department has been starded by the number of people signing up for their new race walk- ing classes and have developed a Walk On the Wild Side fitness walk program for those who want to exercise but not to race in the new striding form. McColl, a multi-marathon runner, became walking converted when she at- tended the Rancho Puerta Fitness Spa in Mexico. She found the early morning hikes both challenging and inspirational, and notes it was difficult to begin the program but later the challenge became more comfortable. Johnson, who will lead her groups from Eagle Harbour Cen- tre, is an athlete and walker. Participants do not need special gear to take a Walk on the Wild Side. Good supportive shoes, usually running shoes, and layered clothing with an option of a small waist knapsack are the essentials. The walk will start and end with a group stretch.
