Doug Collins @ get this straight @ THIS COUNTRY is not the only one that’s gone of f its rocker, Insanity is sweeping the whole of the Western world, and nothing illustrates that better thar a newspaper item from New Zealand. The story is about a double murderer, one Harry Conchie, who tried to escape from prison, Alas, poor Harry fell down the prison wall and broke his arins and legs. But in New Zealand they have an Accident: Compensation Commission, So, representing himself as a deserving case, Harry applied for some money and was awarded $7,500) for ‘pain’ and mental anguish’. Our hero has not been charged with attempting to escape, the authorities being of the view, ap- parently, that he had bad a bad enough time already. Harry is serving a life sentence (which in New Zealand probably means three months with time off for bad behavior). He had killed his cousin and the cousin's mistress in a dispute over druys. “This is the welfare state gone mad,’ expostulated Conchie’s MP on hearing of his consti- tuent’s award, But he’s wrong about that. It is the welfare siate { doing what comes naturally. My thanks to Mrs. D. Swan of North Van for that contribution. Can anyone top it? k we ok Then there’s the story in the June issue of the coyly-named EANGLES — Vancouver's newspaper for homos. [t was headed ‘Employment and Im- migration Gives Eesbiins Plata ing Funds."* The lead paragraph read: “The Vancouver Lesbian Cen- tre has received a grant of $45,000 (fram EF & 1) to research and develop a business that will sup- port the Lesbian Centre." The story continues: “The profit of (the) business would be returned to lesbians directly as workers: to lesbians in- directty through centre services anu political work; and to the community at) large as they demonstrate an alternative to traditional capitalistic structure." The Vancouver Lesbian Centre, it was explained, began with ‘a group of eight lesbians who form- ed a collective in April, 1984, They intend to foster les- bian visibility, education, support and political action.’’ That's your federal government at work, folks. No vote too queer to buy. ~ k® Remember Stan Persky? He's the community college instructor mentioned here last week for hav- ing smashed taxpayer-owned bot- tles of South African wine in a Vancouver liquor store. His way of wrestling apartheid to the ground, you know. Persky (nudge-nudge, wink- wink) is one of ANGLES’ valued contributors, and babbles in that “newspaper” thaton a suany day at Expo sou get a great view and fostling crowds, a “large part of which consists of tecnavers who, by mide dune, ought to be down to cutoffs and tinned flesh. He also reveals that he's been working at Expo asa CBC MMid- day’ commentator, OF course! The CBC is really hot an left-wing bottle-simashers who work for ANGLES, x ok Last but not feast is a letter from Mrs. Elizabeth Whitely of Vest Van, who bas had trouble explaining to the Census peuple that there is a tribe called the Welsh, In the Census form section dealing with national origins there was reference to ‘‘English,’’ etc., but nothing for Welsh. So she went to ‘Other’? and wrote “Welsh, the Welsh being, after all, Welsh, not English, as anyone from the land of the leck will tell you. A womar from the Census of- fice came on the blower ond ske her whesher she was a vetive wae dian. Patiendy, she said sue was Welsh, as stated, but just for fun did not enlighten the woman as to where the Welsh were to be found. The female on the phone was flummoxed, and Mrs. Whitely suspects that an upcoast search is going on for this mysterious tribe. The Vancouver Welsh Men’s Choir could help by standing out- side the Census office and singing Land of My Fathers. WV limits newspaper boxes A REQUEST from the Globe and Mail to West Vancouver District Council to reconsider its limit on newspaper boxes was turned down Monday, The Globe, along with Van- couver’s two daily newspapers, are limited to maintaining 25 newspa- per boxes in West Vancouver. Globe and Mail accounts man- ager Susanne Bradshaw said a significant number of people prefer buying from boxes because it is slightly cheaper than home delivery, and they have the option of only buying the paper on weekends. Bradshaw said the upcoming in- troduction of new corporate colors for the Globe, steel grey and royal ummer Sizzier SALE 00-60% OFF all stock blue, will make the boxes more aesthetically pleasing. Bradshaw said 37 boxes have already been removed from West Vancouver, while 44 remain in high traffic areas. Municipal clerk Doug Allan said in reviewing the request, staff has recommended the limit be kept at 25 to allow them a chance to assess the impact. 9 ~ Friday, duly 25, 1986 - North Shore News to bus LOCAL. bus travellers will notice some route and service changes coming in September, In) North) Vancouver a new peak-period express bus, connec: ting Upper Lynn Valley with downtown Vancouver, will bypass Phibbs Exchange.
