A6 - Wednesday, August 15, 1984 - North Shore News El editorial page Role model only the sourest of cynics could argue that the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics were anything but a resounding suc- cess, despite the unhappy boycott by a number of Communist countries. The widely regretted absences (especially in the case of Russia and East Germany) ob- viously affected the final results. But that ef- fect was mitigated to some considerable ex- tent by the golds that also broke world re- cords and by the noble contribution made by China on rejoining the Olympic family. The U.S. hosts put on a virtually flawless show and if their TV commentators some- times paraded national pride a little over en- thusiastically, they at least had a good excuse - not only because of the successes of their own athletes, but equally because of the Olympic spirit of supreme endeavor linked to friendly sportsmanship which dominated those two.exciting weeks in L.A. Canada’s achievement, in particular -- sixth out of 47 nations, with 44 medals in- cluding 10 golds -- was outstanding in light of our small population compared to numerous of the other competing countries. Hopefully it will inspire many more young Canadians to enhance our new status as home of some of some of the very finest athletes on earth. Nor should it be forgotten that this was also the first ‘‘private enterprise’? Olympics. To mount such a $500 million spectacular at no cost to the taxpayer rates a ‘‘gold’’ in itself. Overall, the Games of the 23rd Olym- piad provided a role model from which the world’s growling politicians might learn much. Looking good... ombre news from Zimbabwe, Britain's former colony of Rhodesia, where Prime Minister Robert Mugabe has just appointed a supreme, Soviet-style committee to lead the country towards a one-party Marxist-Leninist state — staffing it, of course, with personal loyalists. However fed up you may sometimes feel with Messrs. Turner, Mulroney and Broadbent, Mr. Mugabe's new *‘politburo’’ makes Canada’s bumbling parliamentary democracy still look pretty good. Especially at election time. DEAR IONA: I] note that you’ve added the ‘‘nuclear freeze’’ plank to your platform in an effort to give Chuck Cook a black eye among North Van-Burnaby peaceniks on September 4. Smart move! Peace is a hot political property in B.C. My personal survival tn- stinct puts me right behind you -- aside from one little mental hang-up.
