The plant, employing over 35 people is using a process that meets the high environ- mental standards set by the company and the municipality. “Mohawk is the first com- pany in North America to commercially convert used oil by a process of distillation and hydrotreatment to pro- vide high quality base oils,” commented Roy Street, Mohawk’s_ vice-president and general manager. “The company, which has a B.C.-wide network for the collection of used oil, can process 1.7 million gallons in our current Phase I” Street continued. “Phase II, which is scheduled to be opera- tional by 1984 will increase production capacity to 7.5 million gallons annually.” Mohawk Lubricants operates modern custom oil blending and packaging equipment at the North Van- couver plant for Mohawk brands as well as custom packaging for other retailers. It recently intro- duced a new motor oil under the brand name “Phoenix” for the automotive jobber market. The company’s used oil collection service operates a large fleet of special tank trucks for the collection of used oil and has strategic storage facilities throughout the province. Used oil storage facilities are operated by Mohawk in Kamloops and Nanaimo, as well as North Vancouver. Other oil companies in B.C. are cooperating with Mohawk in the collection of used oil at their service sta- tions. In addition, organiza- tions such as the Variety Club of Vancouver are ac- tuve in collecting used oil to raise funds for their various charitable works. The process used at the Photo submitted CLEAR recycled off is checked by (i to r) Mohawk general manager Roy Street, chief chemist Terry Wilson and opera- tions manager Mike Falconer. North Vancouver plant does not generate any pollution, takes the used oil and in the first two steps, removes any water or fuels that have con- taminated it. The oil then goes through a distillation process using a Luwa Thin Film Evaporator which employs a high vacuum us- ing indirect heat and a low residence time. The final process stage is the hydrotreatment, where the oil is mixed with hydrogen at high temperatures under pressure and passed over a catalyst. Under these conditions, the hydrogen reacts with the non-hydrocarbon = con- stituents removing any re- maining chemical im- purities. These processes improve colour and stability, so the resulting base oil is almost water white in colour. Distillation residue is the only by-product from the process and this is in demand as an asphalt extender. A 100 per cent Canadian employee-owned company, Mohawk recently acquired the assets of Spartan Oils Limited and its associate company, B.C. Petroleum Ltd., all based in North Van- couver. Spartan Oil, formed 20 years ago, is engaged in the blending, packaging and marketing of a complete range of lubricants primarily for B.C. customers. “The acquisition of Spar- tan provides Mohawk with a number of experienced high quality people, well trained in the packaging and sale of lubricating oils,” said Street.
