30 - Sunday, June 30, 1991 — North Shore News Books deliver the lowdown on London THE LAST thing 7 put in my hand luggage is a good book, something like my current companion, A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush by Eric Newby, or Peter Mayle’s A Year in Proven- ce. The latter has been a huge best seller in Britain for a year; it is so goed it should be sipped like a delicious wine. Last summer ! received a review copy of Cheap Eats in Paris just as | was leaving for France. On a whim ! brought it along too, decided to try two of the recommended restaurants, and found they were absolutely first class. And | gathered from others that the companion book, Cheap Sleeps in Paris, was also right on the money. Now the author, Sandra Gustafson, has come out with Cheap Sleeps in’ London and Cheap Eats in London (Raincoast, $12.95), welcome editions for many of the 20 million or so tourists who wili spend at least one night in London this year. For the Cheap Slceps book she walked 400 miles, wore out two pairs of shoes and took notes seven days a week, rain or shine. As the author says, she rode in elevators that were short prison sentences, climbed stairs like Outward Bound courses, groped down dark and gloomy corridors, and dealt with rude owners and indifferent managers. She confesses that few of her finds are all that cheap, with $100 a night about the starting rate for a double room. And rather than simply list the cheapest hotels in London, she gives a selection of 135 that should give good value and fond memories. A browse through Cheap Sleeps shows that Gustafson has not only done a thorough job but that she is a mature traveller offering common sense. For example, her observation that London is like any other big city, with good hotels that are fabulous and small ones that are nightmares. “NORTH SHORE VENTURE TRAVEL & CRUISES CRUISE from VANCOUVER To LOS ANGELES from CDN. $599 op Inside Cabin Sept. 15 to 18/91 Holland American Line __SS ROTTERDAM - To SAN FRANCISCO from CDN. $439, Inside Cabin Sept. 29 to Oct. 1/91 Holland America Line SS NOCORDAM To ACAPULCO She says that no matter where you stay or how much you pay, it is important to go with a spirit of adventure, good manners, and expecting to have a good time. Remember, counsels Gustafson, other places are not home and never will oe. If you want your destination 10 be ‘‘just Jike home’’ Perhaps you should not leave in the first place. Her good common sense con- tinues to shine through in Cheap Eats in London, where she says up front that this book is not for people who want to eat for $10 a day, but who want top value for their dollar. She stresses that feod in Britain has come a long way of late, thanks partly to better pub meals and the variety of ethnic restau- rants. But she pulls no punches, such as with her commment: avoid chain steak houses (Angus in par- ticular); the meat is loaded with hormones, the service by recent immigrants is surly at best, and the all-around quality is bottom- drawer. Vd just comment on two places she mentions — the Hard Rock Cafe and Joe Allen’s. Both are refugees for American tourists, where you'll hear loud voices and music. fs this what you came to London for?
