Christmas buying binge tips off police;
seven arrested in Pattison kidnapping case

FIVE of the seven people arrested in connection with the
weekend kidnapping of the daughter of West Vancouver
millionaire Jim Pattison appeared Monday morning § in
North Vancouver provincial court to face ai variety of

criminal charges.

The seven were arrested follow-
ing a wild pre-Christmas spending
spree allegedly involving some of
the $200,000 in marked ransom
money that had been paid by Pat-
tison.

North Vancouver RCMP had
three adult males, three juvenile
mates and one juvenile female in
custody Sunday after police made
two arrests Saturday at Park
Royal.

Two of the suspects were nab-
bed at the West Vancouver shep-
ping centre shortly afterthe police

buying blitz.

Three men now face a number
of charges in connection with the
Dec. 21 abduction of Kilburn:
® Chadwick Shayne Mulvahill. 21,
of no fixed address, is charged

with kidnapping. unlawful con-
finement, extortion and possession
of stolen property;

e Chad Karl Dafoe, 19, of 10200
4th Ave. in Richmond, is charged
with possession of stolen property;
eand Sheldon Frederick Kwan,
18, of 2400 Weymouth Place in
North Vancouver, is charged with
possession of stolen property.

Appearing in court Monday
morning, Mulvahill was remanded
in custody to Jan. 2. To press-
time, Dafoe had not made his first
appearance in court. Kwan did
hot appear in court Monday.

Four youths, whose names are
protected from publication under
the Young Offenders Act, were
also scheduled to appear in court
Monday in connection with the

kidnapping. Three mates, ail aged
16, were remanded in custody un-
tif Dec. 28. A female youth was
relvased.

All three male
charged jointly

with kidnapping, and one was
charged with possession of stolen
property worth over $1,000.

Monday that two of the suspects
were released Sunday aight.

The drama began Dee. 21 when
Kilburn was forcibly abducted
from her home at about 9 a.m.
Her two, four-year-old children
were bound by Nilburn’s abduc-
tors and were left behind in the
house unattended for the duration
of the day.

Police were alerted after a call
by one of the kidnapping ac-
complices directed them to
Kilburn’s house.
