Avoid paint job pitfalls DRIVERS SHOULD check for paint’ under the mouldings and door handles after a new paint job ‘on their car, according to Ritchie Collision manager and owner Kevin Gibb of North Vancouver. By Anna Marie D'Angelo News Reporter He said if the mouldings and door handles are taped over in- stead of removed, a resulting ridge called the tape line could cause problems in a year’s time. “Water can get under there and the paint starts to bubble and rust starts.’” Before deciding to get a new paint job, Gibb said, car owners should fi rst try polishing their cars. |. -.. Most» good. paint jobs start at $1,000, he said, adding that dark colors and: black require one or two coats of paint. while lighter colors require several coats. Some new cars display pearl or opalescent shades which are made by’ applying different colors of paint (also caljed tri-coats). Gibb said a silver color may be sprayed on first and then a dif- ferent color such as red or white applied in the pear!-color process. The silver -will then bleed into the second color, giving a peari effect. A clear coat wiil be applied last. A bad paint job can display a lack of gloss, flat spots and runs of paint, he pointed out. These days, a clear coat is ap- plied last for shine and to help prevent the vehicle’s color from fading. Poor paint applied in a bad paint job can fade and peel within iwo years, while a good paint job using good paint ‘lasts about 10 to 15 years, he said. Gibb said anyone wanting to change the'cclor of their car or truck should take into account other colors on the vehicle. © “You need to make sure the color. blends with the interior for resale reasons.”’ He said ‘tscmi-hidden color” under the hood, in the trunk and along the door .jambs can be painted or left the original color. Gibb said popular colors are white, silver, red and blue. Un- common colors are yellow and orange.
