Two bear traps set after
iore N. Shore sightings

TWO BEAR traps were set Sept. 19 in the Mount Seymour
Parkway and Caulfeild areas of North and West Vancouver
in an effort to capture bears observed (to be roaming
through North Shore neighborhoods.

Lower Mainland conservation
officer Rod Olsen said two of the
bears sighted do not appear to be
eating residential garbage.

On Sept. 15, Lower Mainland
conservation officer Kevin Van
Damme shot and killed a bear at
Alderfeild Place in Caulfeild,

The bear had been feeding on
tesidential garbage for several
days.

Van Damme shot the animal
when it came within 10 feet (3.04
mn) of confronting the officer in a
cul-de-sac,

The animal was the second bear
to be shot on the North Shore this
year.

Olsen said another bear was
killed in July in Deep Cove after
conservation officers determined
that it was sick and old and would
have had a poor chance of str-
viving relocation.

“We certainly don't want to kill
bears. It upsets us to have to do
it. Our policy is to relocate,’’ said
Olsen.

He said bears are killed if they
were overly aggressive, old or very
young.

Eight bears have been captured
or the North Shore and relocated
since April. The animals were
released in the Fraser Canyon
area.

According to Olsen just one
relocated bear has returned to the
North Shore in the past four
years.

The West Vancouver Police
continue to field calls about bear
sightings in the Caulfeild and
Lighthouse Park areas.

A North Vancouver RCMP

Seymour Parkway area is still in
place. A bear was observed in the
vicinity on Monday.

According to the provincial En-
vironment, Lands and Parks
Ministry, anyone spotting a bear
should:

@ keep away from the bear;

@ warn others to keep away;

@ bring children and pets into
houses;

@ remain calm (if a dear is pas-
sing through and finds no food
source, it will likely move one).

A conservation office or the
police should be called im-
mediately if a bear appears to
threaten or show aggressive
behavior.
