They also tell us how we can change our ways in order to live more safe and healthful lives. The Health and Welfare document, Chronic Diseases in Canada, notes, for example, that from 1976 to 1978 53 per cent of all deaths of children between the ages of | and 14 resulted from accidental or violent cause. The three major causes were transportation accidents, drowning, and fires. Of the childhood deaths due to drowning, close to half were children in the 1 to 4 year age group. (Drowning accounted for one-quarter of all deaths in the | to 4 age group.) These statistics reinforce the importance of lifeguarding young children in the water and educating them about water safety as they grow older. Similar care must be taken to protect children from the risk of injury or death due to burns. Statistics again show that children in the | to 4 age group constituted nearly half of those aged ! to 14 who died from burn injuries. It’s, therefore, worth reminding of the obvious: allowing children to play with mat- ches is really letting them play with fire. and great care should be taken in cooking whenever toddlers are around. As for transportation accidents, the high number of motor vehicle passenger fatahties in the 1 to 4 age group may reflect the failure Pair of options FROM PAGE B5 vitamin E, magnesium acid, chelate, potassium/magnes- ium asparate, silenium, garlic, heart and carnitine. Traffic accident statistics show that alcohol is involved in about one-half of all fatal automobile accidents. Perspective on Health also offers statisncs and advice for health care planning.
