Caribbean Days fest to turn up heat on weekend GET ready to “mash it up” this weekend as thousands of Lower Mainianders flock to Waterfront Park for the North Shore’s favourite outdoor party. : The 13th annual _ Caribbean Days Festival will once again’ feature a street parade at 10 a.m. tomorrow, with Cuban dancers, live ‘. music and colourful costumes heading down Lonsdale from Victoria. The island’s approximately 3,000 residents will find them- selves without service for s hour stretches on 23 different days as BC Ferries prepares to replace an aging dock structure at Snug Cove. The Oneen of Capilano cur- rently makes 31 daily 20- minute trips between the Island and Horseshoe Bay. Work on the dock will begin Sept. 5 with the first shutdown planned for Sept. 13. One full-weekend interrup- tion —Dec. 9-10 — is also planned, when vehicle waffic wil be shutdown completely. During reduced service days, the Qseen of Capilano will sail according to the segu- lar schedule, from 5:45 a.m. up to and including the 9:25 a.m. departure from Bowen. Regular service will resume at 3:30 p.m. from Horseshoe Ray. The wooden structures on both sides of the terminal help guide the ferry into place as it approaches the dock. The 35-year-old wingwalls have never been replaced, said BC Ferries communications coordinator Deborah Dykes. “It's the sort of a routine thing that we have to do with these types of structures around the fleet. Eventually they just wear out,” said Dykes.
