2nd sui Dear Editor: I was angry and then saddened when | read that the district council plans to grant blanket approval for secondary suites throughout the district. Saddened because this decision has the potential to destroy the character of many family neighborhoods in North Vancouver. There are probably a dozen illegal suites on muy street. There were a few when we moved here nine years ago, but most have appeared in the past few years and the neighborhood character has defi- nitely changed. It is now less friendly and there are more “strangers about. There is much more vehicle traffic, and it seems that people drive faster and have less regard for pedestrians or childrea riding their bikes. There are many more cars parked on the road and driveways which detracts from the neighborhood aesthetic. Secondary suites do change neighbor- hoods. Their occupants are more transient and generally less committed to and less involved in their comraunity, Those who live in secondary suites pay no property taves for schools, hospitals, police and fire services, road mainte. nance, libraries, recreation facilities, parks, ete., ete, This places an unfair bur- den on those who do pay property taaes, i.e. people who cent or own an apartment or single family home. Eventually this will lead to a deterionition of municipal services, Finally, consider that secondary suites inevitably tum a single-family neighbor- hood into a multi-family neighborhood. People who want a single-fantily envi- ronment simply move out and suite-build- ing speculators move in. Over time houy- es are converted for avultiple suites, so that two or three rents can be collected from the same property. Pye scen this happen in single-family neighborhoods in Surrey and Vancouver when illegal suite by-laws were not enforced. Who benefits from conversion of sin- gle-tamily neighborhoods to multi-family use? Those who see a house as an invest- ment from which the highest possible HOMEOWNERS AG us MOEA HEI Ne MEANS EC KU Nab tae! tes not so sweet retum must be eamed: not people interest- ed in building strong, safe neighborboods and communities. Lo urge you to reconsider this issue. keeping in pind the impact your decision will have on the future of North Vancouver District. C. Michact Battistel North Vancouver Prime Minister's broken promises Dear Editor: Whatever happened to that friendly old folksy Jean Chietien we got to know in between Liberal governments? Looks like we're back to the hard-nosed Minister of Finance who supported Trudeau's policy of nuing Aoman who didn't keep his promises then, and can casually kick out an honest colleague who wanted him tu keep his GST promise, now.
