I empathize with the pain and concern of its owner. But in all the fear and hatred we are spread- ing for coyotes, bears, raccoons, cougars and whatever other wild animals are preying on our beloved pets, we have forgotten that we humans created this situation. As we destroy more of the nat- ural habitat of these creatures, we annihilate the food chain that has sustained them. Are they villains now because they are seeking food to live? Should there not be an equal or greater outcry about the millions of cows, pigs, chickens, lambs and sea creatures we slaugh- ter to fill our stomachs? I love animals, domesticated and wild. Because I lost a cat to raccoons this spring, | speak with experience of that sorrow. As we invade more and more of the wilderness, we will have to accept that the wild beasts have a right to be on this Earth as much as we do and that we had better learn to cohabit with them. They are part of the web of life and to destroy them is to destroy ourselves.
