The dives were performed by a Norwegian diving contractor to 360 metres in two specially built Newtsuits. The Newtsuits worked flawlessly at full depth with no apparent change in friction or envelope of movement from that experienced at shallower depths. The. dives were conducted by Stolt-Nielsen:Comex on board the dive ‘support vessel Seaway Con- dor for Shell Norway. The Newtsuits and associated equipment have been installed on the Seaway Condor to be used this summer during the installation of the Draugen Platform in the Norwegian sector of the North ea, The specially. built and high-performance Newtsuits thruster BUSINESS packs were built in record time and were delivered in late 1992 so that an extensive training program which trained 20 pilots, techni- cians and supervisors in Newtsuit operations could be completed, The Newtsuits were also upgraded to the latest Norwegian Petroleum Standards, which in- cluded larger composite oxygen bottles, external regulators and a complete life-support monitoring system . The Newtsuit is the world’s most advanced atmospheric diving suit, using a breakthrough in rotary joint development that permits low-friction movement under extreme pressures.
