PART Wil: Timely con-
siderations on the subject
matter of my _ screenplay,
Cult. By their fruits, we
know them.

Those who choose to be led in
this fashion (see Part II) are not
duped innocents.

Greedy for a quick and guaran-
teed salvation/liberation, ‘they
goad the leader/father to commit
more and more outrageous acts,
to make more outrageous prom-
ises, through which they hope to
experience vicarious atonement.

Thus, many ‘‘earthly spiritual
fathers’? are led by their follow-
ets, by their needs and expecta-
tions,

When the outcome proves
disastrous, the followers affect ig-
norance and impotence. ;

But surely they must have
known the signs. Surely, where
doubt is seen as ‘‘sin’’ and ques-
tion as ‘‘heresy,’’ the seed. of
destruction has beensown.

Young people need. to be
reminded that human nature. is
ambivalent, that leaders are entitl-"
ed only to our respect, that we are
obliged to say again and again to

those we allow to lead us: ‘‘There -

is but one source and ground of
all beingness or ‘God.’ "’ :
All new religious enterprises, of
course, tend to be damned and
dismissed as cults.
The term is pejorative; ‘*cult’’

suggests a band of fierce believers ©

who have surrendered themselves
to obscure doctrine and a danger-
ous prophet.

Yet some religions that are in-
stitutions now, more permanent
and stable than most govern-
ments, began as cults.

Although Jonestown, in ‘1978,
prompted a widespread revulsion
against cults, fairness suggests that
one standard of judgment can still
be applied: “By their fruits ye
shal} know them.”’

Religion and ‘‘insanity’? occupy
adjacent territories. in the mind.
Historically, cults have kept up a
traffic between the two.

There is usually an. ‘‘us against
the ‘world’’ fortress | mentality
{consider the Branch Davidians).
‘We,’ the ‘positive’? versus the

“‘negative’’ or ‘‘dark.”*

The prevalence of cults today is
based (partly) upon an edifice of
unhappy sociological cliches:
breakdown of the. family and
other forms of authority,
rootlessness and moral flabbiness
of life.

Paranoia is often a cult's prin-
cipal instrument of discipline.
“Depart this group vortex or
‘vibration’ and see what happens
to you!”’ Fear tactics. .-
