History of Hanukkah recounted

At that time, the Jewish people
had returned to the land of Israel
from Babylonian exile and had
rebuilt the Holy Temple. But they
remained subject to the domina-
tion of imperial powers — first,
the Persian Empire, then later, the
conquering armies of Alexander
the Great.

Finally, Israel found itself under
the sway of the Seleucid Dynasty
— Greek kings who reigned from
Syria.

At first, the rule of the
Seleucids was rather benign but
there soon arose a new king, An-
tiochus IV, who erected altars
with statues of the Greek gods
and goddesses.

Seeking to impose Hellenistic
culture and ensure assimilation,
Syrian soldiers rounded up the
Jews and forcibly compelled them
te make offerings and adopt
Greek customs.

In response to the suppression
of Jewish culture and religion, a
partisan band formed in the hills
of Israel. Under the command of
Yehuda Maccabee. they miracu-
lously defeated successive bat-
talions of heavily armed Syrian
soldiers.

After a decisive battle at Bet
Tzur, the partisan army proceeded
to Jerusalem, liberated the city
and reclaimed the Holy Temple.

An important part of daily ser-
vice in the temple was the kindling
of the brilliant lights of the
menorah. Now with the temple
about to be rededicated, only one
small jar of pure, sacred olive oil

supply, and it would take more
than a week for the special pro-
cess required to prepare more oil.

Undaunted, the Macabees lit the
lamps of the menorah with the
small amount of oil and dedicated
the Holy Temple anew. Miracu-
Jously, as if in confirmation of the
power of their faith, the oil lasted
for cight full days.

The following year, the sages
officially proclaimed the festival
of Hanukkah as a celebration
lasting eight days, in perpetual
commemoration of this victory
over persecution.

To this day, the menorah is a
cultural, humanitarian symbol,
whose lighting celebrates the eter-
nal victory of the Holy over the
profane, and the sanctity of fami-
ly and goodwill amongst all peo-
