A7 - Wednesday, July 14, 1982 - North Shore News No development until crossing in Dear Editor: It is annoying to read what the North Vancouver District Council has in store for citizens of the Seymour area. Not only are they planning to ‘unfreeze’ construction in the Seymour-Indian develop- ment, but we are also to be blessed with a high-rise tower at.gthe foot of the Second Narrows Bridge. Obviously no council members live east of the Seymour river and thus have never had to battle existing traffic during peak hours. Every day at five o'clock the cars are backed-up onto the Second Narrows Bridge just waiting to exit and merge with the traffic jam _ that inches its way over the Seymour. The recent ad- dition of a small shopping complex and second traffic light on Dollarton near this junction has only added to the problem. It is too easy for council to give in to the wishes of developers without con- sidering the thousands of people who already live in the Seymour area. The much needed “new” Seymour crossing is to be primarily funded and constructed by the provincial government, which claims to have no money and assigns a low priority to such a project: Even if they were prepared to start tomorrow, building a bridge and road of this magnitude cannot be done overnight. (Witness the long time that it took to complete the new Mosquito Creek crossing.) North Vancouver District knows these facts well and should curb their desire for development until improved access is provided. Put the heat on the Province and not on the residents of Seymour! S.J. Berry North Vancouver Had Hitler right to his ‘lifestyle’? Dear Editor: As a resident of Hamilton- Fell, I feel compelled to respond to “Bikers entitled to lifestyle”, North Shore News, Wednesday, July 7. Firstly, I would suspect that the person who wrote this letter is renting ac- commodation on Tobruk Avenue. A homeowner would have, of necessity, a totally different attitude. As an example: when we at- temped to sell our property on Tobruk Avenue, a real estate agent cautioned us against it, at this time. Not only would prospective buyers be put off by the motorcycle gang at 913 but we would also have to sell it at a greatly reduced price. It is an indisputable fact that the bikers’ presence in this area, is decreasing property values. Everyone 1s entitled to their own lifestyle, providing their behaviour docs not infringe upon the rights of others. In a democracy, the majority rules. In Hamilton- Fell the overwhelming mayjonty are clean, quiet and keep their homes and yards in good repair. To describe the motorcycle gang as the minority is a gross un- derstatement, when they do, KENNEDY McDONALD MEN'S WEAR “THE FINEST IN MEN’S APPAREL” SUMMER SALE A GROUP OF... ~ Hathaway Shirts ~ Sport Jackets ~ Sport Shirts ~ Sweaters - Ultra Suede Jkts 765 Park Royal Be West Vancouver in fact, stick out like the proverbial sore thumb! I also find it ironic that the writer who professes to be concerned about human rights, is not repelled by the Nazi insignia worn by the gang. or by the Nazi flag flying from their rooftop. You insinuate that the new legislation was necessary to allow enough advertising by breweries at B.C. Place so that the stadium could keep itself going. Please allow me to provide you with some facts. The stadium at B.C. Place was conceived as a viable entity when legislation did not permit alcoholic products to be advertised. Obviously, the new legislation will enhance our advertising revenue by providing us with additional revenue sources. However, there is no evidence anywhere that such = ad- vertising is sufficient to sustain stadium cash flow. Furthermore, the new legislation is enlightened because, in consultation with the beer and wine industries, a reasonable portion of the advertising content must deal with educating the public about the tremendous respon- siblilites that go with alcohol consumption. In your diabtribe you omitted any reference to the fact that the B.C. Association of Broadcasters has been lobbying for ten years for this legislation so they could gain a portion of ‘sense ... the Canadian, British Columbia advertising dollar from the beer and wine industries. This has nothing to do with the Stadium at B.C. Place. Transborder broadcasting is costing local business in excess of $5 million per annum in lost advertising revenue, which is several times more than the money the stadium will derive. Your statement that the “jocks will come staggering out of the stadium” causing unknown toll in terms of lives, limbs, etc. “is non- The stadium at B.C. Is it only jocks who enjoy a cool beverage at home, in a restaurant, tavern or night club, or is it the average citizen who, generally speaking, has demonstrated the capability to practise temperance and restraint with regard to alcohol? Finally, your own con- tradiction serves well to illustrate the wisdom of the advertising legislation. You stated that if advertising didn’t work then nobody would bother to waste money on it. Does it not make some sense, therefore, to use the powerful medium of advertising to educate as well as inform the public about beer and wine and ali its implications? 1 think it is very unfair to assume that advertising is the cause of excess.
