have finally become comfortable
with the shorter Iengths and want
to stick with them. Many of the
designs for fall come in both
lengths for the less adventurous
among us.

One strong and widely seen
trend for fall is the resurrectioa of
menswear-styled designs for
women. But instead of the floppy
bow ties of the early ’80s, the
newer styles have an Edwardian
influence, with bowler hats, fitted
jackets and slim legs, adding just
the right feminine touch.

The uncertainty over what
women want in the way of
hemlines has brought trousers
back to the forefront of the fash-
ion world as designers take into
account that many women may
not appreciate the varying skirt
lengths.

One designer -.aking this con-
to heart is Ralph
Lauren, whose fall collection.
evokes memories of such beauties
as Greta Garbo and Marlene
Dittrich — both of whom helped
change the way people felt about
women-wearing men’s clothing,

Also going along with the
longer trend was New York de-
signer Isaac Mizrahi. His runway
was chock-full of long lengths.

The one- outstanding difference
with Mizrahi, however, was his
sexy cotton jersey designs for
night. Cut tight to the knees, these
sweatshirt-inspired dresses flared
to a mermaid tail at.the bottom.

Another thing to keep in mind
for fall is that many of the sports-
wear lines are very casual. Lots
of jeans — not. necessarily . blue
denim — and tons of cotton T-
shirts. - .
