SPORTS NV swimmer earns spot on nat’! team VAUGHN THOMPSON, a 16-year-old swimmer from North Vancouver’s Chena Swim Club, came up with a strong showing at a Feb. 19 to 22 swim meet held at the Winter Nationals in Win- nipeg. He finished fourth in the 200- metre breaststroke with a time of 2:17.3, which was a new B.C. re- cord. The showing earned Thompson a spot on the Canadian team that will be going to the April 18 to 20 Eight Nations Swim meet in Stockholm, Sweden. Thompson will also be going to the Olympic trials in Montreal from May 13 to 17, where he hopes to earn a place on Canada’s Olympic team for Barcelona, Spain in July. Thompson trains at the North Vancouver Recreation Centre and is coached by Chena’s head coach John Meinikow. Other members of the Chena Swim club did well on Feb. 21, 22 and 23 at the B.C. Junior Provin- cial AA championships held in Kelowna. Twelve members of the club competed in the event: e@ Scott Williams won gold in the §0-metre freestyle and silver in the 100-metre freestyle events; @ Kathryn Jolley won bronze in the 100-metre fly and the 200- metre individual medley; @ Megan Hayter won a brorze in the 400-metre individual medley and placed fifth in the 100-metre backstroke; @ Lara Cubitt won bronze in the 100-metre breaststroke and finished fifth in 200-metre breaststroke. Meanwhile, the West Vancouver Otters arrived home with a hard- ware store load of medals from the Junior Provincial swim meet. A total of 27 members of the Otters went to Kelowna recently for the AA age group provincial -championships hosted this year by the Kelowna Aqua Jets Swim Club. In all, 487 swimmers entered the mect, representing 29 swim clubs from across B.C. Swim medals were awarded to the first three finishers in each finat and ribbons for fourth to sixth places. The age group rep- resented at the meet were 10 and under, 11, 12, 13 and 14 years old. Recognition for the swim of the meet went to. eight-year-old Zachary Semeniuk of the Otiers for bettering his qualifying time for the boys 10-and-under 100 metre butterfly by 16 seconds. In the event final he came only -O1 of a second short of equafling the AAA standard for the 10 and under age group. Also notable was the depth of the Otters’ 10-and-under girls for for taking both the gold and bronze medals in the 200-metre freestyle relay.
