By Michael Becker News Reporter The committee includes repre- sentation from the North Van- couver District Fire Department, the North Vancouver RCMP, the North Vancouver unit of the B.C, Ambulance Service, the North Shore Rescue Team and North Vancouver District. Said North Vancouver RCMP Insp. Dave Roseberry, ‘We're at- tempting to come up with a way to make the park a safer place. Generally we feel the only thing we can do is educate and maintain a certain level of enforcement re- garding the use of alcohol within the park.”’ The use of alcohol has been a contributing factor in many of the mishaps at the popular swimming and hiking area. While Roseberry admits that alcohol enforcement is a_ hit- and-miss proposition, police have backed regular patrols of the park with roadblock checks for alcohol coming into the park. Meanwhile, North Vancouver District Fire Department and the North Vancouver unit of the B.C. Ambulance Service are teaming up with the Spinal Cord Injury Prevention (SCIP) program to Friday, August 10, 1990 - North Shore News - 5 Canyon cliff diving rescue demo scheduled present a cliff-diving rescue demonstration at Lynn Canyon Park on Sunday. The SCIP program is a joint project of University Hospital and the B.C. Paraplegic Association, The injury prevention session is meant to educate individuals seck- ing to ‘‘live on the edge"’ by leap- ing from Lynn Canyon cliffs. SCIP guest speaker Steve Hartley will be talking about how to prevent injuries by taking smart risks. “It's very common sense, but we try to create discussion about these things,’’ said SCIP program coordinator Mary Ellen Lower. The SCIP strategy covers safety issues in the home, at play and on the road. Before diving into water, Lower recommends checking for water depth, obstacles and currents. “Consider your weight and height in terms of a dive,’’ she said. ‘‘Some young people grow- ing up may be making dives year after year in one area and forget- ting that they are getting heavier and taller. Some people dive and don’t keep their arms above the head.”’ But Lower stressed that SCIP and the participating team of North Shore emergency personnel are not encouraging the kind of risk-taking witnessed along the cliffs of Lynn Canyon. “Education is our main focus. Auother form of prevention is en- forcement,”’ she said. Hartley’s talk and the simulated rescue operation will take place Aug. 12 starting at 1:30 p.m. near the concession stand at the Lynn Canyon suspension bridge. 89” SESSIONS 1 MONTH STILL TIME TO FIRM! : Wee sNCHES.
