Chet Baker — Sings And Plays From The Film Let’s Get Lost, Novus 1989 Chet Baker’s music is an easy in- troduction to the cool blue west coast jazz style. Brooding trumpet notes resonate — residual embers from some dark and unresolved passion. The voice is a simple, sighed whispering. The song selection gives us choice bits of Baker, Cole Porter, Duke Ellington and Elvis (Almost Blue) Costello. Buttery bass work by John Leftwich stands out. Check it out and play it repeatedly fram midnight on. lan Hunter/Mick Ronson — YU! ORTA, PolyGram Records 1989 These ex-glam rockers showed the listless audience at last week’s Vancouver Hunter-Ronson con- cert that young-dude demeanor exists solely in the head. Ronson holds up as one of the few truly preat school-of-ear- blistering lead guitar players around. Hunter was a whiskey- throated original during the early 1970s and continues to sporadical- ly pen introspective mush and in- cendiary mayhem. Here, the Mott The Hoople cohorts spark and ig- nite on the grinding flat-out rocker Women’s Intuition and American Music, a ned from Hunter to past musical influences. Roy Orbison And Friends — A Black And White Night Live, Virgin Records 1989 Roy Orbison — The Singles Col- lection 1965 - 1973, PolyGram Records 1989 and, because he is quickly becom- ing immortal, we mortals have a second chance to get to know him a little better. MICHAEL BECKER record review The live release is an offshoot of a 1987 television project which saw the man in biack teamed with Jackson Browne, T Bone Burnett, Elvis Costello, k.d. lang, jennifer Warnes, Bonnie Raitt, ).D. Souther, Bruce Springsteen and Tom Waits. Sadly, the lineup is superfluous. The guests are deployed as mere session players to the star. The result is a clean- enough-sounding live portfolio of Orbison hits. It could have been a great record had some of the wor- shipful others been able to give and take a bit centre stage with the legend. The singles collection is a revealing skip through MGM holdings. Orbison spent the entire period attempting to regain the popular momentum attained when he hit big with 1964's trademark classic, Oh Pretty Woman. We know he didn’t quite make it, but there are some myth-building cuts See Transvision Orhy lives on and on and on JAZZ TRUMPETER Chet Baker does the slow burn on a great movie soundtrack release.
