Residents roar over jet noise A CANADIAN Forces pilot flying Thursday from Cold Lake, Alberta to CFB Comox on Vancouver Island in an F-18 jet fighter made an unscheduled flight plan change and buzzed the North Shore, Richmond and Squamish Thursday morning at elevations 2s low as 1,500 feet. 1°’ The News and various federal government agencies were deluged with complaint calls from residences. The jet, which was approximately 30 miles from CFB Comox when it changed its flight plan, made several passes over North and West Vancouver and Squamish at approximately 10:15 a.m., ratt- ing homes and windows and (terrifying local residents. North Vancouver resident Sean Torrebadelie, 21, said the noise from the jet wuke him from a sound sleep. **I thought it was a Concorde,’’ Torrebadelle said. ‘‘It was really loud.” Transport Canada spokesman Bill Almotky said his office received over 20 complaints about the jet within an hour. According to Canadian military regulations, a jet fighter is not permitted to fly lower than 2,000 feet. North Shore mountains are over 4,000 feet in elevation, and development in North Vancouver District is permitted to just over the 1,000 foot level. To press time Thursday, the jet had Iaaded at Vancouver Iater- national Airport for refuelling. The pilot was subsequently ordered to return to Cold Lake, where he faces disciplinary action. Relatives of the pilot reportedly live in the Lower Mainland. W. By CORINNE BIORGE Contributing Writer . The proposal, based upon view analysis work by city consultant Aitken Wreglesworth, will allow towers of up to 150 feet (16 to 17 storeys) to be built with a mini- mum separation of 80 feet between em. A city staff report released to council said staff supports the proposal because the existence of permanent buildings and the small parcelling of lands, coupled with city-ownership of lands in the area, will stop the “uniform realization” of four towers per block. But Ald. Barbara Sherp said permanent buildings. can be knocked down, and other areas can be manipulated. She said the only real control the city has over highrise construction under the proposal is in development on its own land. “We should exercise preven- tative. medicine,”’ instead of hop- ing developers would not take ad- vantage of the zoning, she said. Other council members, while criticizing the proposal, said they supported forwarding the motion to a public meeting to allow for more input. “As much as I don’t like it, I think it should go to the policy meeting so the options could be discussed in an open forum,” said Ald. Bill Bell. Bell said the motion was unrepresentative of the majority of people that spoke at the previous public meetings. “‘They came and said they didn’t want this,’ said Bell. “Sixteen to 17 storeys is just far too high.” Ald. Frank Morris agreed the motion should not be adopted by council in its present form. ‘‘We'll have Hong Kong on the North Shore,'’ he warned. Bell was also critical of the staff analysis of development options. He said the proposal does not of- fer enough density reduction op- tions, relying instead on current densities. “(Density reductions) would save the views more than all these options,”’ he said. Sharp also criticized the report for assuming that developers would not be attracted to areas zoned with limited building heights. “Developers can use their imagination and still get a return on their money,’ she said. Of the council members present, Ald. Rod Clark was the sole sup- porter of the motion. “‘Rarely have I supported a staff report more than this one,” he said. 5 - Friday, June 2, 1989 - North Shore News ‘Scuba Divers!: iNeed current: ideas/info fort vo us for “Midnight Madness”, TONIGHT : ' Capilano Divers Supply! | 1236 Marine Drive from midnight until .....!! $5G°° off PP. on your next Club Med vacation.
