Sanieienig 6 - Fridsy, May 12, 1989~ North Shore News INSIGHTS Students from afar add to family’s summer fun “SUMMER WOULD NOT BE COMPLETE without them,’’ enthuses Mary Wright (no reiation) of North Van. She’s talking about the summer language students her fami- ly has hosted for the last nine years. It’s called ‘‘Homestay’’ and it makes possible the Capilano Col- lege program which, each summer, brings students from Eastern and Japan to study English and related cultural sub- jects. Aged 19-25, the students live with local families for periods varying from two to six weeks. Mornings are spent in language classes, with afternoons devoted to recreational activities. Some even- ings are scheduled for other Col- lege-organized activities and the students spend at least one weekend away on a field trip. Not that host families find the experience in any way burden- some. On the contrary, they seem to enjoy it as much as their guests. Mary Wright, husband Ralph and daughters Jennifer, Julie and Tasha say the opportunity to get to know and to communicate with someone from another culture is exciting. North Van’s Tom and Joan Parry echo their sentiments: ‘‘Each year we look forward to hosting the students ... it’s fun being in- volved in their activities and we’ve made some lasting friendships.’’ Hosts are remunerated, of course, in cash as weli. The pro- gram for French-speaking students runs from May 21 to July 1, with Homestay families receiving a $630 stipend for the six-week period. Japanese students will visit July 9-30 (three-week stipend $315) and again July 25-August 11 (17-day Photo subnitted LUNCHBUCKET LADIES...Nancy Buker (second from right) and fellow war workers at Wallace Shipyard in 1941. A resident these days of Kiwanis Lynn Manor, Nancy was recently being treated to a lunch by the management of The Rusty Gull when, to her delight, she espied a blow-up of the photo on the wall of the pub, which lies just across the block from the shipyard. So now, 48 years later, she’s eager to contact the other girls in the picture if they’re still around and get together with them for a reunion party. And though the Conservative government has repeated its commitment to the massive icebreaker project, it would be hard to blame anyone connected with the Polar 3 for being skeptical about the sincerity of that commitment and the sincerity of the Conser- vative government. Following years of local lobbying to bring the $350 million contract to the West Coast, while billions of dollars werth of government shipbuilding contracts went to Eastern Canada, the Polar 8 appeared on the West Coast horizon. But its final arrival in port was made contingent on a successful financial restructuring of Versatile, whose corporate parent was seriously ill.
