Church raises concerns Dear Editor: Regarding your sory, Nov. 27, of the 76-faot steeple proposed for the new Roman Catholic church on Keith Road, West Vancouver, it is not true that the neighborhood has been canvassed for opinion. Some of us have protested from the conception of this plan to ra- tionalize all North Shore church activities. The result has been an increase in traffic and parking problems during church and school activities. On Nov. 3, 1986 I spoke before council and the fast act of that dy- ing administration was to approve the Development Variance Permit #86-17. Now a new touch has been added: the addition of a 76-foot steeple plus a cross and possibly a bell. My immediate concern is traffic and safety and this could be reliev- ed by allowing an entry and exit on Burley Drive which runs parallel to Keith Road. However, | am op- posed to the creation of a North Shore cathedral. Ald. Rod Day’s remark on traditional village architecture nas little to do in this day and age of the conflict with regulations per- taining to church building in RS3 zones. One stresses the residential character of the Cedardale area and how if equipped the single homeowner is when faced with a large development buttressed by a great number of the faithful and aided by an experienced architect- cum-public relations expert. The long history of this development shows how a church, which pays no property taxes, can out-manoeuvre a_ succession of councils, residents and ratepayer groups. One starts to feel like the camel driver, who invited the camel to put its head into the tent because of inclement weather and ended up outside the tent the next morning. No one opposes a place of wor- ship but the city fathers did not in- tend its regulations to be nibbled into non-conforming structures.
