i t A % (Doug Collins @ get this straight © IT IS a puzzlement. Why do the big thinkers of this coun- try treat AIDS as a human rights issue rather than as the most threatening medical problem of this century? The Vancouver Sun has just discovered AIDS, for example. But in its 11-page series, the status quo was accepted and the key question was avoided. In its place we got a few quotes from civil rights gurus who assured us we musn't be “‘prejudiced’’. Dr. John Blatherwick, a practi- tioner of wimpish talk and Van- couver’s chief medical officer, said there should be laws to pro- tect AIDS victims from discrimination. He should face facts, not worry about the rage of the infected. What we need are measures to protect the public from con- tamination, not laws to protect the contaminated from discrimination. That is the popular view, too. The Sun’s own surveys indicate that 90 per cent of the population want mandatory testing for the disease. People would probably also back a campaign showing that because of AIDS, homosexuality kills, Right now, though, such a campaign is unthinkable. Instead, there is this silly pretence that it just happens to be the homosex- uals who have been hit first. So far, this plague is still con- fined mainly to homosexuals. Ninety-seven per cent of local AIDS cases are in that category, and most of the rest are needle- loving drug users. But officialdom and humea-righters shy away from pointing the finger. Their motto is ‘‘Death Before Discrimination’’. I have not seen a single anti-AIDS advertisement that even mentions homosexuality. The propaganda spreads the myth that sex is safe provided a condom is used. But 10 per cent of unwanted pregnancies result from the use of faulty condoms and the same percentage of failure must also apply when they are used to prevent AIDS infection. Yes, AIDS is spreading among heterosexuals. But unless we face the danger posed by homosexual practices we are volunteering for disaster. We are so chicken that we tefuse to have immigrants tested for AIDS even though all im- migrants supposedly undergo a thorough medical examination before coming in. In effect, we are saying AIDS Yes, TB No. Why are we so stupid? It pro- Luigi’s Moka Ristorante 5 “SPECIALIZING IN” AUTHENTIC ITALIAN CUISINE * DINE & DANCE FRI. & SAT. EVENINGS ~ @ FEATURING - RICKY FUOCO FRIDAY & SATURDAY EVENING ¢ LUNCH & DINNER bably has something to do with the politicians’ fear of being seen as ‘“‘racists’’, most immigrants now coming from Third World countries. AIDS may be raging out of contro! in Central Africa, but the Baloneyites and the sce- no-evil brigade would rather see us in our boxes than take tough action. It is not a cause for celebration, either, when an immigration lawyer like Dennis McCrea of the B.C. Bar Association announces that as far as he knows we are not getting a lot of immigrants with AIDS, How far does he know? And wouldn't even one be too many? Immigration isn’t the main threat, of course. WE are the main threat, being so faint- hearted. Not too long ago, anyone suffering from any kind of fever was sent to a ‘‘fever hospital’’. Today, antibiotics have more or less killed fevers but are useless against AIDS. Yet anyone who suggests that AIDS sufferers should be isolated risks being de- nounced as a madman, a crank or a fascist. That will change when the plague prospers. Which it will. And it will be interesting to see what the Blatherwicks have to say then. The Sun’s series was a useful exercise. But nowhere in all 11 pages was there any mention of why homosexuals are so easily in- fected with AIDS. The reason is simple, though: anuses were not made for sexual intercourse. Unlike the vagina, anuses punc- ture easily, with the result that blood and infected semen mix. And there goes another one. I'm all for protecting homosex- uals, of course, provided I’m pro- tected first. : OUR OVERSTOCK (NO COUPONS 9 - Wednesday, June 24, 1987 —- North Shore News WASP is ‘sadly ignored’ Dear Editor: Enough! I have finally been pushed to write you re: Doug Co!- lins, hate literature and discrimina- tion, Like James Johnstone and his 54 other fetter writers I am an unfor- tunate WASP. I am sadly ignored by the mighty pen of Collins because I don’t fall into the cate- gory of colored, immigrant, woman, gay (take my word), Ies- bian or Jewish, etc. It is all quite logical, of course, by Doug as Collins is like you and me, Johnstone. Other than being a successful writer, radio host and POW escape artist, Collins is dull and boring like us — working out at the fitness group then drinking scotch. We are neighbors who have never met. Why, he and grey eyes don’t even complain about loud parties or kids’ jalopies. Come on, Collins, be fair, don’t let us miss the prow of your pen. David S.
