Participants are asked to assemble at 11 a.m. The rally is an event in which participants drive their own cars, along with a navigator, throughout the Lower Mainland following clues supplied at the star- ting point. The scoring will be based on how well participants have read the clues and how close to a set time par- ticipants complete the course. The time is based on going the speed limit at all times. Following the rally there will be a barbecue at G.F. Strong Rehabilitation Centre. A dance and awards presentation will take place at 7 p.m. in the downstairs hall of the paraplegic association at 780 Trophies will be awarded to the top three finishers as well as a team trophy and a media team trophy. In the 1940s, paraplegics were charged a 10 per cent surcharge on their insurance premiums because it was felt that hand-control drivers were more prone to ac- cidents. As well, the Motor Vehicle Branch imposed a speed limit of 50 kilometres per hour on hand-control drivers. Statistics have proven that disabled drivers are less of an insurance risk than their able-bodied counter- parts, and because of this there are currently no special restrictions on hand-control drivers and the insurance premiums have been reduced. The original idea of the car rally was for paraplegics to sect out to prove to the general public that paraplegics can drive as well as anyone else. Southwest Marine Drive.
