By TIMOTHY RENSHAW News Reporter The move from its current loca- tion within the intimate confines of the Anne MacDonald Hall resuits from a combination of the foun- dation’s own rapid expansion and a gentle push from its Presentation House landlords. Since taking up residence in the hall in September, 1984, Cunn- ingham’s dance foundation has gone from offering regular night dance and exercise classes for the aerobically overdosed, to establishing a Clare Cunningham Youth Company, a_ performing apprenticeship program and pro- fessional ballet classes. “The expansion since fast fall has been phenomenai,’’ says CCFD administrative director Gayle Bertrand. Members of CCFD’s profes- sional ballet classes, meanwhile, will be featured in two spring per- formances of newly choreographed material at Vancouver’s Firehall Theatre as part of that theatre's Flip Side series. While concentrating on dance, | the performance apprenticeship program developed by Cunn- ingham is designed to improve the Stage presence and performance skills of young people involved in a wide range of the performing arts. “‘Basically, what we are develop- ing is comfort of movement,” Ber- trand says, ‘‘because no matter what area of performing you might have ambitions for, movement and stage presence is vital."* in addition to CCFD’s blooming success, the move from Anne MacDonald Hall results from the Presentation House’s plans to establish a professional theatre school in the hall. With five instructors and Cunn- ingham herself, the foundation, incorporated’ in February, 1985, also offers a wide range of ballet, jazz and stretch programs that of. fer a more physically demanding . ‘and ultimately more satisfying ‘valternative to aerobics” to /whip body and soul into shape. DANCE FIT Trained in the Martha Graham method of dance, Cunningham says dance is’ one of the best ‘overall ways to get physically fit. The Martha Graham method, “she says, focuses on kinesotherapy, which. emphasizes careful controll- “ed physical alignment over the *gaucous bourice of aerobics. - -- Asa result,-Cunningham says a lot of. her students are medical referrals whose injuries require the . subtlety of dance exercises. : THE VANCOUVER WALDORF SCHOOL K-12 Believe it or not, girls’ sizes 7-14 casual pants in assorted styles Regular to 28.00 Save 75% on Girls’ L/S White Biouses, sizes 214 Boys’ and Girls’ Cord Pants, sizes 2-6X Girls’ Plaid Shirts, sizes 4-6x and much, much more _.
