2 - Sunday, May 19, 1985 - North Shore News High library fees WEST VANCOUVER, home to Canada’s highest per capita wage earners, is now home to the North Shore’s most expensive library services. By TIMOTHY RENSHAW An imminent cut of ap- proximately $50,000 in West Vancouver’s $1 million library budget has forced library ‘administration to make up the lost revenue by raising various library charges. The cost of reserving a book has been doubled from 50 cents to $1, the ceil- ing for overdue books has been raised from $2 to $4 with a 10 cent per day charge, the price of a single photocopy has gone from 15 to 20 cents. Use of the library’s meeting room, which used to be free, now costs $5. Jack Mounce, Chief Librarian of the West Van- couver Library, says the in- creases were instituted with great reluctance, but ‘‘in order to maintain the level of - library services there was no alternative.” The proposed 1985 West Vancouver Municipal budget, says Mounce, ‘was fairly rough on us. The feel- ing is that services like roads take priority.” Mounce adds that while in- creases in West Vancouver HOME FURNISHINGS Warehouse/Showroom OPEN TO THE: PUBLIC {2 biks. behind ihe Avaton} at 1075 Roosevelt Cres., N.Van. 3:4 in, 9O0-B 738 ADVERTISING CORRECTION Eaton's Linen Plus - Sale Flyer appearing © in the North Shore News Wednesday, May 15, 1985 Page 3 — items SC and 3D — Embroidered eyelet skirts/shams. Library charges reflect the budget cut and the increase in general costs, they do not ful- ly cover the actual costs of the services. Kay Easdown, Head of Adult Circulation for North Vancouver City Library, says the library has no charge for reserving books, ‘‘we have a lot of unemployed people us- ing the library and felt, at this time, that it would be a hard- ship on some people to charge.”’ North Van City Library charges 5 cents per day for overdue books up to a max- imum of $2. Photocopies are 15 cents. The City’s library budget has risen from $856,700 in 1984 to $881,500 in 1985. Adult Collections Coor- dinator for North Vancouver District's three libraries, Blair Thompson, says the District library charge of 25 cents for reserving books is more a nuisance charge to discourage frivolous reserva- tion of books than any at- tempt to cover costs. He adds that the District’s library ree0™___=_—_—_—_—_—_—=—=—_—_— —— AE oS SS A ee SN SY Ha = Se he ee mm, SHAPE UP AT HOME — or high wage budget has not suffered the cuts that West Vancouver's has. District Chief Librarian, Enid Dearing, in declining to give details of the District’s 1985 library budget, said figures have yet to be approved. West Vancouver Library Board member, David Hall, says regardless of provincial government claims to the contrary, restraint is still very much with us, and adds that West Vancouver has made a sincere effort to keep the municipality’s tax rate down. “*Everybody wants the ..with hi-tech exercise equipment... the natural way to lose fat... strengthening musctes, bones & ligaments... improve cardio-vascular fitness... look great and feel great at any age!!
