Ssnertt Picees PO Lees MORE THAN JUST AN AMUSEMENT MOST PEOPLE consider dream analysis a bit of a parlor game. At most, something to amuse others during a coffee-break. By ADRIAN CHAMBERLAIN But those of us who take our dream analysis seriously get professional heip. Recently I took a dream of mine to the Centre for Dream Research in West Vancouver, and discussed it with research director Saleh Abusaidi, a dream analyst who has studied over 30,000 dreams. My dream? I was paddling a big green canoe with a friend. It was a nice day, and the water was calm, but we couldn’t get anywhere. The canoe seemed heavy. And then, suddenly, my friend disappeared. According to Abusaidi, the fact that the canoe’s progress was slowed down might sug- gest that I felt slowed down in ‘‘life’s journey.’’ And the loss of my friend could sug- gest feelings of being ‘‘out of contact with people.’’ **The main principle is that everything in the dream is you... the sky, the sea, the paddle. It all expresses a state of our own existence,’’ ex- plained Abusaidi. ‘‘The dream does a beautiful job of play-acting our present state of being.”’ And I thought it was that piece of cheese I'd eaten before going to bed. Abusaidi, who has a doc- torate in psychology, has been interested in dream analysis for about 10 years, and set up his dream research Offices last July. He has taught courses in dream analysis at two Oregon col- leges, and originally came to B.C. to teach similar courses at U.B.C. But due to a “‘lack of interest’’ among students, the class was cancelled. Since July, about a dozen people have come to Abusaidi to learn basic prin- ciples for understanding and analysing their dreams. He describes the dream centre as a ‘“‘non-profit organization dedicated to dream research.’”’ ‘‘Some people have paid a fee of $5 to $10; some didn’t. My main interest is not to make money, but to study dreams. They acknowledge that I can use their dreams for my research.”’ Abusaidi says the Centre for Dream Research isn’t associated with any universi- ty of educational institution. Although Abusaidi is in- fluenced by Carl Jung and Gestalt psychology, he says his method of dream analysis is all his own. Abusaidi em- phasized that the best way of analyzing dreams is to learn to do it yourself. Symbols in dreams are very personal, he says, and ultimately only have meaning for the dreamer. Most people forget their dreams within about ten seconds of waking, said Abusaidi. But with training, one can learn to recall vir- tually all one’s dream. Abusaidi said he has about 40 to 50 dreams a night, and is able to remember them. According to Abusaidi, dreams have four purposes: 1. to teach you what's wrong with your life 2. to teach you what's right in your life THE ONE AND ONLY avy, _— y 4 e S 2 4 ] <~ \ E-Z BETA SL2400 ‘84 MODEL LOW, LO Paatoaiene) een % ee e ¢ Sophisticated Component styting 6 | 9 : © Full front loading oporation kip ° Beta Scan/Beta S' Sean high-speed picture search Easy setting 3-day/\-event timer ® 14-push bution Express Tuning ¢ Wireless RMT 314 Remote Commander (opttonal $69 95) § coundCRArT TV 79 - Ae pee ». 987-8811 1820 Lonedate N.
