C10-Wednesday, November 12, 1980 - North Shore News Washington D.C. well worth a visit A view of the White House Fm not sure that the star of ‘Bedtime for Bonzo’ will be the Lincoln of the °80’s but, there he is — Ronald Reagan — star of Holly- wood, California and the White House! Bet he can hardly wait to move in. 1 visited the White House a couple of weeks ago, not as an honored guest of the Carter administration, bul as a foot-sore tournst who stood in quite a line-up. Three blocks long, that lhne its enough to discourage anyone except Americans and travel columnis\s. Your best bet is to join the end of the line just before closing time currently 12:00. If you're already in line, the Parks Board guards will allow you to stay but no extras are allowed to wait after noon. 1 was told the line moves amazingly quickly - it does - and when I[ got inside | understood why. There's VERY little to see. If you've got any dreams of seeing Lincoln's bed or the ‘OVAL OFFICE’ or the grounds - forget it. You enter into a hallway that contains portraits of ex-first ladies. Then into another hallway with some exhibits such as posters and china. A flight of Stairs leads to the East Ballroom where both J.F.K. and Lincoln he in state. It has four fireplaces but wouldn't hold much more than 150 people in comfort. From there you’ walk through the green room. Blue room, red room and oval dining room - and OUT' The whole place is much smaller than | expected. The rooms are colorful and beautifully decorated. for all raffled off. Is 3 to 10 pm. I'd do it again - how could | ever cxplain to my kids that 1 vestted Washington, 1).C but skipped the White House” Washington, D.C. is worth a visit, especially if voure a history freak. Its a fine city - kept up as a national shrine - humming during the day with government but quict al night. A large percentage of the people who work in Washington don't hive there but) commute = from the suburbs. Baltimore = and wherever by day The trains are BUSY There ms a tourist bus service that you can buy Friday Nov. 14 trom pass for one day custs $5 - but you'll get around faster and cheaper on the subway. If you decide on a bus pass, buy it after 2:00 p.m. and it’s good for '* ‘ernoon and the whole neat day If you don't have a lot of time, you must be selective in what you plan to see. Here are some Suggestions: 1. Take a night tour of the memorials. The Lincoin and Jefferson complexes are open 24 hours ands are dehghtful at might. The Iwo Jima sculpture (Marine Memorial) is taken from that famous Rosenthal photo that appeared in Life mayazine - a group of Marines raising the flag. Ira Hayes, the Amencan Indian, was one of the flag raisers. All but one ts dead. This is one of the four places in the United States where the stars-and-stripes flies all mght - Fort Henry ts another. 2. The Mali contains more Smithsonian Museums than the average person can absorb in a year. Give it one day - choosing one for the morning and one or 2 for the afternoon. You can catch the subway to the mall and walk the rest of the way | chose the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum for my first stop. Did you know that the Spirit of St. Louts had the call fetters XL-X-2017 Its hanging mght alongside the Kitty Hawk in the foyer. Moon rocks and flight crew uniforms from 1930 on are part of the parade. On pain of death, don’t eat in the Ai and Space food service, third floor.
