women ¢ t.v. listings September 10, 1980 Creating a symbol for NV City Planning coat of arms for 75th anniversary By PAT RICH The idea has been accepted, the = first committee has been formed, and by 1983, the 75th anniversary of the City of North Vancouver, the municipality should have an official coat of arms. City council in a policy meeting, last week, voted unanimously ino favour of establishing a coal of arms for the City and established a committee to start work on the project The idea was first suggested to the City August 1&8. by Robert Watt the curator of the Van couver Manne Museum when he appeared as a delegation and said it was “tuume for (the City off North Vancouver to consider some new symbols.” Watt, who acted as heraldic advisor for Rich- mond when it was granted a coat of arms last year, said that North Van should apply for a coat of arms in order to have a new symbol for the municipality's 75th an niversary. He referred to the City's current insigma “as nol a particularly distinguished piece of design.” Applying for a coat of arms ts a fatrly = straigh- forward process, Watt said, but added that the City should apply now in order to be sure the new insignia would be ready for 198 3 Atthe August 18S mecting Watt presented council with some suggested designs of what a coat of arms could look like Ato last) weeks policy meeting owas) quickly obvious that council Tel. 985-2131 members were very much in favour of the idea “We've never had anything we can exchange as a momento,” Alderman Stella Jo Dean lamented “lt would be appropriate to have a symbol that ex- presses the character of the City,” Alderman Gary Payne said As a first step, council voted to estabhsh a com. mittee, consisting of Mayor Jack Loucks, the City clerk. and Robert Watt, to oversee the process of getting a coat of arms approved The process for receiving official approval of a Coat of arms would procede along the following lines Council must first formaitly petton the Heraldic College in London, England for a coatolarms Watt suggested this should be done before a final design is approved A compethbon of some ‘SECTION other method would be used to come up with suggested designs for a coat of arms and the the committee would choose the best design This design would be forwarded to the heraldic college who must give final approval to the design.
