is that they allow gas vapours
to escape into the trunk area
(the place where cans are
usually stored). If this
happens, all it takes is a
simple fault in the car's

wiring and you're going to
set a new speed record.

U.S. RULES
DIFFERENT

In Canada, motorists may
carry gas in their car if it’s
stored in CSA-approved
cans. These are usually
made of plastic and are
available at most auto parts
stores at prices ranging from
about $4 to $10.

In the U.S., gas must be
carried in metal cans which
are proportionately higher in
cost. Canadians may,
however, carry their CSA-
approved cans into the U:S.,
but the limit is around 10
gallons(U.S.)

YOUR BEST BET

Unless you're travelling
over long distances where
gas isn't readily available,
your best bet is to simply
make sure that your tank is
topped off most of the time.
Not only does this give you a
margin of safety; it also cuts
down on the amount of
condensation that will
develop. Condensation, if
left to develop, will even-
tually cause rusting and
corrosion in the tank and gas
lines, a problem that can be
very expensive to solve.

average American motorist
will have to cut his driving by
about 5 per cent compared
to last year to meet the
Energy Department's
