Findings of the report made public at a Sept. 9 school board meeting were based on questiun- naires completed by 37 youths (ages 12 to 18,) 47 parents and 27 teachers, counsellors and school administrators. “West Vancouver is like any other community with respect to drug and alcohol use,’’ said Joanna Sangster, educator for Vancouver's Alcohol-Drug Educa- tion Service. The drug-education service was contracted to do the report by West Vancouver School District 45 (WVSB) because of a perceived need, said assistant superintendent Bob Overgaard in an_ interview after the meeting. During the meeting, Sangster told the school board that life skills were the essence of preven- tion in alcohol and drug abuse by young people. “Kids have got to feel good about themselves, be able to make decisions and be able to say no when they want to,'’ said _ Sangster. According to the report, West Vancouver youths, like their counterparts in the rest of B.C., use alcohol as a drug of choice. And most West Vancouver teens who drink prefer to do so on Friday and Saturday nights during the school year. They prefer to do their drinking socially al parties or gatherings. The report also states that West Vancouver teens drink in homes during the winter; in the summer they change locales, preferring to drink in the parks, at the beaches or in the woods. Thirty-three of the 37 youth participants rated alcohol and il- legal drug use as somewhat to WEST VANCOUVER SCHOOL BOARD very serious problems among their age group.
