Gi mailbox DK Dear Editor: As a student of Sutherland and a participant of the Community Recreation Twelve class offered at the school, I would like to untie the blindfold to those who believe this course and others like it are a waste of time. (Sue Cook’s letter to the Editor, May 18.) The course standards are ex- tremely high. Students are expected to have a minimum of ten hours of community Film maker thanks local residents Dear Editor: Would you kindly. assist Corazon Production in reaching the many people af- fected by our location film- ing in recent weeks near Marine Drive in West Van- couver and on First Street near Mission Street in North Vancouver. The cast and crew of “The Hitchhiker” would lke to thank the local residents, especially the owners of both location homes, who took our “invasion” of | their neighborhood in stride and with good homour. We could not have done it without your Co-operation and we apologize for any in- convenience expenenced. In addition, each student is placed in an elementary school or old folks home to assist for one or two hours each week. Survival in the outdoors plays another important role in the course. Many hours are used in the classroom to prepare the students for the harshness of the wilderness. Then a weekend trip is spent Pastor queries ‘nature’ Dear Editor: I appreciate the comments of Bob Hunter on the new Spintuahty of the West Coast. He may be right. Perhaps nature is the new icon through which people encounter the God of Crea- tion. Perhaps all the em- phasis on boating, skung and other outdoor recreation confronts people with the Holy. There is much that is in the Old and New Testaments that affirms nature as holy ground. It was through a burning bush in the wilderness that Moses met God and retumed to help his people. Jesus himself spent much time alone in a “lonely place” and this was an in- tegral part of His ministry of caring for others. If this is the new spintuality of the West Coast, then all of the Church will reyoice Specials Sq Restaurants fora 27 : . If it had not been for our knowledge of hypother- mia gained through many hours of classroom lectures, the couple in the canoe might have died. Fortunate- ly, we were there and within fifteen minutes we had them ashore, warming themselves by a campfire and wearing dry clothes donated by the But, the opposite could happen. This time spent close to nature could be nothing more than self- indulgence. These gods pro- mise a good life but only set us apart from both nature and other people. All we will have done is to use nature to stoke our ego and flee from an encounter with the “Ground of our Being”. If this is true then nature itself will fall prey to our exploita- tion and the road to Whistler will be marked with broken beer bottles, broken lives and broken communities. The hunger for new mean- ing does exist within and around us, but it is not clear to me if the current flight from the church to nature will be a wholesome spintual movement. I would lke to hear more from Bob Hunter about this. He has touched a cnucal area of our common A7 - Wednesday, June 15, 1983 - North Shore News THE COVESIDE students. How can experiences like this be a waste of ume? How can any course that offers field trips that give the stu- dent actual experience rather than have them read it in a book be a waste of time? Isn't it better to show us the real world while we are still in a learning situation so we can enter adulthood with a more realistic attitude and new ideas on how to improve the future? 4323 Gallant Avenue North Vancouver (Deep Cove) NOW RENTING — Unique Opportunity for High Quality Suite In Special Location QUALITY FEATURES — New Concrete Structure — Six Deluxe Appliances — 40 oz.
