You should have seen him when he showed up bere, that very night, to drop off the pieces of plywood that go under the seat cushions of the old beige chestertield where the coils have virtually caved in from him napping on it. See, my dad had, in catching the big fish, won along standing bet he had with his fishing pal Hans and they were on their way to Fly's Encore to collvet. Before he was out of the car he hollered out the win- dow, “E caught 4 preat big fish today!” There's no having a normal conversation with your mother when vour dad’s caught a big fish. “Maureen,” he said to her Cedar Root excitedly as he was coming in the door, “Show Shannon the pictures.” “Tleft them in the car®, she answered, rolling her eves at me. Can you imagine my Dad showing around pictures of sweaters my mother has knit- ted? Apparently CKNW had been announcing the big catch all day, although my Dad said he wasn’t completely comtort- able with all the press. “Just phoned everyone he knows today,” my mother told nee doctor away me while my Dad sprinted back out to the car to get the pictures. After a quick visit, during which we got all the details of the catch, they were off for dinner. “You can put the picture on your fridge,” my Dad ordered, fairly skipping out the door.
