14 — Friday, November 7, 1997 — North Shore News Danyliu jumps from WV. chamber Robert Galster News Reporter robert@nsnews.com THE West Vancouver Chamber of Commerce is losing one of its directors as a result of the chamber’s stand on Lions Gate Bridge tolls. Former West Vancouver Coun. Andy Danyliu ten- dered his _ resignation Tuesday. “I believe that tolls by local authority are no more acceptable than tolls by provincial authority,” stated Danyliu in his letter of resig- nation. A chamber proposal calls for the creation of a First Narrows Crossing Authority that would arrange both the financing and subsequent construction of a new cross- ing. The proposal also calls for a toll on the new struc- ture. But when it’s paid off, the rolls would be removed for people such as West Vancouver commuters and others who reside in the area. However, the toll would continue to be charged to reward those who paid for the span in the first place. The inclusion of any toll concept within the proposal and the implications it may have on future decisions in surrounding regions stick in Danyliu’s craw. “Soon every local authori- ty would be tempted to fill local coffers by charging peo- ple who travel through their community a road tax of some sort,” said Danyliu. West Vancouver Chamber of Commerce president John Clarx gave Danyliu’s concerns lite weight. “We were only looking to make suggestions —_—for options,” said Clark. “We've had resignations from the chamber before ... like any organization people make their choices.” More recently, Transportation Minister Lois Boone voiced her support for the local authority concept during last month’s chamber meeting, but stopped short of endorsing the chamber’s plan. 1 . cl . ws NEWS photo Terry Peters SEAN and Donna Johnson commemorated the July birth of their first child Mikaila by planting a tree Monday at Cates Park. Tree of life grows Layne Christensen News Reporter layne@nsnews.com A North Van family has put down roots in their community that will semain for generations to come. On Monday Donna and Sean Johnson, family and friends commemorated the birth of the coupie’s first child, Mikaila, by planting a tree in Cates Park. The fifteen-foot (5 m) scar- let oak is located near the Deep Cove park’s concession and picnic area. The Johnsons hope other young families will follow ENE their lead. The district has a program to commemorate the dead, said Donna Johnson, reterring to the parks department’s memo- rial bench program, “we fig- ured why not do something when somebody's born.” The District of North Vancouver's urban parks sec- tion manager Richard Boulton likes the idea and is working to implement policies and proce- dures for a tree commemora- tion program. “As the child grows, so does the tree,” said Boulton. The proposal is one of the first pro- jects handed over for review by the district’s new arborist Robin Gardner, who was hired FOR CHRISTMAS | s Custom-built Closet Organizers © Increase Overall Closet Capacity up to 100% © Affordable Custom-built Interiors ¢ Adjustable Shelving ® Installation of Do-lt-Yourself © Custom-designed for Linen & Clothes Closets (} © Mirrored Doors to 8’ tall FREE ESTIMATES WOODLINES CUSTOM BUILT FURNITURE FOR HOME OR OFFICE § CANADIAN CLOSET “A family owned business since 1984" 1385 Crown St. N. Bautton said the tree plant- ing benefits the community in another way. “We try to promote com- munity involvement in) our parks system, and this is a way for someone from the commu- nity putting something back into the parks,” he said.
